Mirrormask
Check out the trailer for Mirrormask. I had no idea that Dave McKean was directing. It looks amazing. One of the quotes at the top of the trailer says something about a Wizard of Oz for the 21st century, but it honestly looks much more like Labyrinth mixed with City of Lost Children to me (which makes sense, being Jim Henson Creature Shop-ped out and everything). Interesting to see the Creature Shop using so much CGI. It actually looks a lot like I imagine an Abarat movie would look, only with considerably less color (the palette is very Dave McKean - lots of gold and brown and black), and the mix of handdrawn animation, CGI, and live action is close to what Clive Barker had talked about for an Abarat movie, way back when the first book came out. If I didn’t know Mirrormask had a Gaiman story behind it, though, this trailer might make me question its plot, since so little detail is given. Still, I’m not sure we’ve see a major release movie that’s so abstract in quite a while.
“People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.” - the trailer for V is for Vendetta is also up. The political metaphor in this makes it very exciting for me. I’m very interested in how fantasy and sci-fi are being used to discuss modern politics right now. Also see Battlestar Galactica and, I’m told, Harry Potter.
