Explode your TV Channel
Here are my notes for the here! meeting, most of which we never covered, but that form a geneal outline for how I’d explode a television channel, were I ever granted such powers. Interestingly, after writing all this out, I’m a little less interested in actually doing it. While it’s all very exciting stuff, it also all almost all inevitable; companies that will be thriving in five years will be doing it, those who don’t will not. And since I’d need some credentials (like, say, a degree) to be in control of such grand schemes, the time it would take to get such credentials pretty much makes the whole concept moot. By the time I’m in a position to bring a company up to speed on digital media, they’ll either have begun or been left behind. But it turns out that I’m not so interested in these predictable preliminary steps anyway. I’m more interested in the social aspects of media, which are still a bit down the road. So, I’m more certain than ever that I should go back to school and spend the next two years working on the really innovative stuff, and leave this relatively obvious transition stuff to those who can figure it out for themselves.
In any event, on to the spiel I created for here! All due credit for many of these ideas to Tom Coates, Jeff Jarvis, Cory Doctorow, and others, with many of the facts via Lost Remote and PaidContent.

Excellent summary. Thanks for the Lost Remote shoutout. Now I am going to steal your notes without feeling guilty. Come call me when you want to start the Exploding TV station.
Don’t go back to school. Things will only advance two more years while you’re busy… uh… having a ton of fun. Actually, maybe you and I could switch places.

Hey Safran,
Thanks for reading! I’ve been a LR fan for a long time, and have pushed your posts across the desks of many a short-sighted exec. I’ve been ready for awhile, but I’ve been ping-ponging from doing it myself or bubbling change from within - on one hand I lack the resources, on the other the authority. Which was the impetus for grad school, even if now I know I’ll (happily) spend my time working on even more experimental stuff. I know things will be different, but having two years to focus and build my arsenal should put me even further ahead of the game. Plus a diploma from ITP should go a ways toward getting me meetings. Oh, and the fun, mustn’t forget that!
Steal away - that’s what it’s there for! Take freely, and ask for more if you need it, and I’ll see what I can do. In the meantime, I’ll be reading attentively. Thanks for reading back - it’s good to know you’re out there.
