The One About the Rain
I’ve been chattering on my LJ tonight about the torrential rains here in Los Angeles. It seems like two solid weeks of water (really, it rarely let up for more than an hour) have finally cracked LA’s sheen. It took awhile, but today was chock full of bizarre happenings, from the tragic mudslide in La Conchita, which killed a few people and shut down the 101 for 27 (!) miles, to the 25 foot tall ACME-esque boulder blocking both lanes of Topanga Canyon. Yahoo has some scary AP video of the mudslide here.
What is going on? Really, it just doesn’t seem that bad. Do giant boulders fall from the sky in other rainy places? I’ve yet to hear of any from Carlisle, UK, where they’re experiencing the worst floods in 200 years. I want to say “come on, LA, get over your desert-y self,” except, damn, really bad things are happening, and people are dying. The whole situation is surreal to me.
||Update||
Doc Searls is reporting that the MSM has dropped the ball on the mudslide story, with the exception of KNX, which is now reporting 3 dead. Bloggers all over are writing about it, though. For the record, I did first hear about there being deaths from CNN’s new RSS feed, which was reporting 2 dead as of this post.
