ITP and Me

Everyone's been asking me about ITP (for obvious reasons), but I've yet to come up with something succinct. Here, then, is the best I've done thus far, plus a moment of surprising clarity on the scope of my life, from a MySpace message to a friend who found out that I'm going from her mom, who may be stalking me:

The program's official (from 1979) name is the "Interactive Telecommunications Program" - ITP for short. It's focused on the intersection of a whole bunch of stuff like technology, art, sociology, economics... The idea is that we're thinking creatively about technology, figuring out what the next steps are, and then actually making them. In my application, I referred to it as "applied futurism" - think about what the future will be (or could be), then build it! There are a bunch of similar programs, but ITP is the only one that I'm eligible for that focuses on actually producing things, rather than just theory. Which I like!

And yes, I'm super excited. I think we're hitting that "get on with our lives" phase of our mid-20's - weddings, new jobs, new cities - and this is almost certainly the right thing for me. Getting to spend two years hanging out with smart creative people and building cool stuff sounds like so much fun. I think ITP will put me on a good course to continue to do that for a long time, hopefully the rest of my life. And what more can I ask for?

So, that's the gist.

Also, the program will grant me a mythical Masters of Professional Studies in Interactive Telecommunications. Never heard of an MPS before? Me either.

Urban Computing

Sneaker Seed update

Here's my presentation for Urban Computing last week, giving an update on the Sneaker Seed project, outlining the problems I've had with the different router firmware, and suggesting using an Arduino + (the forthcoming) Matchport as an alternative solution.... (more)

Sneaker Seed

Here's my project proposal for Urban Computing: One of the themes that I've been interested in is the shift from matter to bits disrupting the necessity of urban density. So I started thinking about what that density could provide that... (more)

Street: Market

My responses to Adam Greenfield's market essay: One of the major benefits of a market (as opposed to more dispersed merchants) is the immediacy of comparison shopping - I can weigh not only prices from different merchants, but different products... (more)

Networked Objects

Social Bomb concept

I've been brainstorming with Mike and Scott about ideas for our Networked objects final, and after consulting with Tom today, we're definitely honing in on building some kind of game interface. Here's my description of our idea, which is totally... (more)

CookieNet followup

Here are the results of CookieNet, which I deployed Wednesday afternoon to an unsuspecting ITP. Implementation: The deployed version of CookieNet worked as described in the initial project outline, with four cookies to a parcel and three parcels plus on... (more)

CookieNet

For our Network Effects midterm, we have to design and implement a network. Here's my proposal for CookieNet, which will disseminate cookies throughout ITP. Cookies will be packaged four in a bundle, with four bundles plus one single cookie in... (more)

Identity & Privacy in a Networked Culture

New technology of any sort forces us as a culture to reexamine our assumptions about ourselves and our world. Sometimes those assumptions morph easily between technologies and media, providing a natural transition as the new medium takes its place in... (more)

Final Project: Entropy

I'm planning on working with Eric on researching, measuring, and representing the transfer of energy from sources (like coal, wind, and solar power) to data products (like a single email or an hour of World of Warcraft). We think we're... (more)
